How can I teach my kitten "table manners?"?

My fiancee and I just adopted a very affectionate kitten. Being college students, most of our eating is done on our futon, and our kitten has no restrictions about getting in our faces (and food) while we try to eat. We are also having problems keeping him off of the kitchen counters and the dining room table that we share with other roommates. He is not at all afraid of us trying to shoo him away and isn't phased by being squirted with water. How can we teach him to stay off of us while we're trying to eat and let him know what places are restricted?
