In my opinion you don't need to be with him. If he acts phony he's not right for you.Heck he should have defended you from the popular girls. I would say test his feeling for you. Try talking to another guy in front of him like in a friend manner but flirty too just don't make it too obvious don't want a hooker label. Measure his reaction and ignore him for that day and the next if he text you don't text him back just make him suffer. On the day after that tell him you've had a change of mind that you can talk to him but you'll meet him at the place of your choice. When you meet explain that you're very hurt and don't understand how or why he acted the way he did and basically tell him everything that is bothering you EVERYTHING don't sugar coat it either. Then be prepared to walk away if he still wants to continue this show of his because you don't need to be an actor. If hes right for you then he'd drop it and be real.
