Should I date my best friend from when we were kids?

My fiancee recently left me and this other girl broke up with her boyfriend. We were best friends in grade 4 until grade 9.We were always together all those years and even slept over at each others houses every weekend but we never even kissed. We have always talked about dating all our lives and our families always joked about us getting married one day. We recently reconnected and she has made it very clear she wants to date... over IM... She was over and didn't even sit with me while we watched a movie or give any signs at all so I assumed she wasn't interested so I didn't make any moves so i made her a bed on the futon. But then asked me later why i made her sleep in the living room and not with me... we both know we would treat each other extremely well. But I am worried we have both gone down different paths... I like rock and metal, i smoke, and do some drugs and am a pretty dark person. Could be labeled as a punk in high school. She likes hip hop and runs marathons and plays soccer. She likes pink and would probably be a jock in high school. Do you think it is a good idea to try dating? Is it a rebound if we both know we would be good to each other and we have talked about dating all out lives but were just too scared to try it? sorry my question is so long its just a complicated situation. Thanks for any advice you have.
